Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, raised in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art through her aunt Denise as a young child. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt time that she required during the day for the love of theatre, literature, and art. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was well-informed and taught her how she could use the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time that she spent in the state to stimulate her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English along with African American Studies. While she was studying, DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was asked to examine the garbage at the home of one of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism duties, and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay began her work working as a junior press assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition, she started various promotion and lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective.
